Can Yoga Save Your Sex Life?

The surprising benefit of saying om Need another reason to get thee to a yoga class? It improves your sex life, according to a new study published in International Society for Sexual Medicine. And surprisingly, it’s not because of the sensual poses.
Practicing yoga for an hour twice a week for 12 weeks seemed to increase both sexual arousal and lubrication in women who had metabolic syndrome. Besides having a host of risk factors for heart disease and other health problems, women with metabolic syndrome also tend to have lower sexual desire and function.
So how can yoga help in the bedroom? Yoga reduces stress and boosts blood flow for better hormonal function, and increased overall blood flow also means increased blood flow in the pelvic region, says Vikas Dhikav, PhD, neurologist at Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in New Dehli, who studies yoga and sexual function.
What makes yoga different from other exercises is that it may take the benefits of increased blood flow even further by promoting harmony between your brain and body. “This harmony is disturbed in people who experience sexual dysfunction,” says Dhikav, who’s currently conducting a study comparing yoga and jogging to test the theory.
Even though researchers looked at an overweight population, researchers say the benefits apply to anyone. “We’ve conducted similar studies and it usually takes an hour of yoga a day for four weeks to see improvements,” says Dhikav. “And this applies to all types of yoga.”
