The Secret to Killing It at Work

Here’s an office memo worth circulating: Step away from the computer and hit the gym. Exercising during work can lead to higher productivity, according to a recent study in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.
Exercise improves your mood, gives you more stamina, and reduces stress, all of which increase your productivity, explains study author Ulrica von Thiele Schwarz. Translation: Impress your bossand work on your six-pack
In the study, more than 170 dental-care employees were split into three groups. Why dentistry? “Employees are in fixed positions throughout the day,” Schwarz explains, “and have to deal with people who are, well, not always happy to see them.”
People in the first group were required to use work time to exercise twice a week—an hour and 15 minutes each session. The second group had the same reduction in work hours, but weren’t required to exercise, while the third group continued to work 40 hours a week.
While all three groups maintained the number of patients they treated during the year, the employees that exercised reported a significant increase in the quantity and quality of their work compared to those that didn’t spend time working out. They also took fewer sick days, allowing them more time to work.
