Stay Fit (and Sane) This Semester

Send by Abdellah On 3:20 AM
Hey undergrads: Feeling crunched even though the semester just started? Hit the gym with your hall-mates. Working out in a group can help college students beat stress, finds a new University of Minnesota study.
Researchers assessed the exercise patterns and mental health statuses of more than 14,000 students and found those who met vigorous physical activity recommendations—at least 20 minutes three or more times a week—felt less stressed. And social students were more likely to meet those fitness marks than undergrads who kept to themselves.
The findings suggest that it’s easier for college students to engage in physical activity if there is a social aspect, says study author Nicole A. VanKim, M.P.H.
Not only will working out with a buddy help beat stress, but it can also be more effective than a solo sweat session. A study at the University of Pittsburgh found that people who hit the gym with a friend lost one-third more weight than those who went alone. Bonus if you can find a friend who’s in a little better shape than you as an exercise partner: Research from Kansas State University shows that working out alongside someone you perceive as fitter than you can boost your motivation and performance.
